Your motherboard's limitations are dictated by the
chipset that is running on it. All of our primary motherboards carry an Intel chipset, so
we will provide a run-down on th erecent history of Intel chipsets.
Intel 440BX AGP Chipset - 66/100 MHz Front Side Bus
Intel's BX chipset is the first
PC chipset that is offering a front side bus that runs at 100 MHz and therefore enables a
higher memory bandwidth as the common 66 MHz FSB used to.
Intel® 440BX AGPset Highlights:
- Optimizes Pentium II processor 350-600-MHz performance by
enabling 100-MHz SDRAM and memory.
- Supports both 100-MHz or 66-MHz system and memory bus
designs.
- Quad Port Acceleration improves system performance.
- Enables "best-of-class" 3D and multimedia and
gaming platforms with the Intel740 accelerator-based graphics card.
- ACPI-compliant power manageability.
- Supports Wired for Management capabilities in desktop and
mobile platforms.
- The first chip set to support the Mobile Intel Pentium II
processor.
- Ultra DMA/33 improves access to all IDE devices
- USB enables instant connectivity to peripherals.
Intel 440LX AGP Chipset - 66 MHz Front Side Bus
Intel's LX chipset was designed to fix a lot of Pentium II
problems.
Today's Intel® 440LX AGPset Highlights:
- High-volume, high-quality platform.
- Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) improves overall system
bandwidth for superior 3D graphics and video performance.
- SDRAM support enables faster memory reads and writes and
supports faster data streaming between the Pentium II processor and graphics controller.
- Dynamic Power Management Architecture (DPMA) enables
enhanced power management and fast resume
- Ultra DMA/33 improves access to all IDE devices
- USB enables instant connectivity to peripherals.
Intel 440EX AGP Chipset - 66 MHz Front Side Bus
The EX chipset was designed to provide a low
cost Slot 1 alternative. The idea being that a low cost mainboard teamed with the Intel
Celeron© CPU would help to move people away from socket 7.
Intel® 440EX AGPset Highlights:
- Cost optimization with tuned feature set for Basic PC market
segment.
- Optimizes the performance of Celeron processor-based Basic
PCs.
- Enables design of Net PCs with Celeron processor
performance.
- Brings AGP functionality and multimedia computing capability
for today's graphics and video applications.
- ACPI-compliance enables enhanced power manageability.
- Micro ATX motherboard form factor for cost-effective
production.
- Ultra DMA/33 supports high-speed disk drives.
- Support for 66-MHz SDRAM enhances graphics and video
performance.
- USB enables instant connectivity to peripherals.
Intel® 430TX PCIset: 82439TX System Controller
The TX chipset is the All-inclusive final
solution for the Socket 7 board. There will be no other Socket 7 chipsets from Intel.
Intel® 430TX PCIset Highlights:
- Designed for MMX based CPU's, Supports all Pentium class
CPU's
- Optimizes PCI bus for high speed video and memory access
- Ultra DMA/33 supports high-speed disk drives.
